Recording artist Estaire Godinez, just off the road after touring with George Benson, was Wain McFarlane’s featured guest at the Oct. 29 Insight/KMOJ Public Policy Forum. On spirited percussion and vocals, Godinez jammed with McFarlane (guitar) and associates Peter Schimke (keyboard), Greg McFarlane (drums) and Serge Akou (bass), on the Carlos Santana classic “Oye Como Va” and her original number, “Save Your Love For Me.” The near-capacity crowd was nothing short of delighted by the impromptu session as McFarlane and Godinez joined forces in flawless compliment, fusing Latin Rock with laid-back jazz.

Godinez was in town playing at St. Paul jazz club the Dakota to promote her recently released CD.

Born in the San Francisco Bay area, Godinez, who is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, spent 15 years living in Spain and the Netherlands, emerging herself in a diverse world of sound, and has been performing professionally since 1978. The Minneapolis-based artist has performed virtually all over the globe. Living in Europe in 1980, she established herself in Amsterdam, Holland, opening for Peter Tosh at the Paradiso as well as the London-based punk rock band Bow-Wow-Wow.

In Madrid, Spain she worked as first call with a group of other musicians, from house bands for popular T.V. shows, to recordings or tours through out South America and Europe. She has recorded a movie score and contributed dozens of albums of various styles of music, including jazz, salsa, and rock. Since 1994 she has remained in the U.S., performing and recording with the likes of such notables as Prince, Pete Escovedo and Mint Condition.

The vastly accomplished Godinez was in good company last Tuesday playing with Wain McFarlane. Best known for his 15 years with Ipso Facto, a name synonymous with reggae, Wain displays his guitar virtuosity in numerous styles of music. Always known for his energetic stage presence, he has shared the spotlight with such highly regarded figures as Neil Schon of Journey fame, Chaka Khan sideman Jeff Lee Johnson and Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, who presented Wain three original songs, two of which are included on the Wain McFarlane Band’s first CD.
