MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins have announced that for the first time, fans will be able to have a voice in selecting new members to the Twins Hall of Fame. An online ballot is available at www.twinsbaseball.com for fans to log on and vote for their favorite past Twins Uniform and Non-Uniform candidates.
Voting is conducted by a 56-member committee, which includes the fan vote as one "member". A total of 42 votes (75%) are required for election in both the Uniform and Non-Uniform categories. If however, more than one candidate receives 75% of the vote, only the highest vote getter is elected unless any other received at least 90% of the votes. Should no Uniform or Non-Uniform receive the required number of votes, the top vote getter will be inducted. No more than two Uniform and one Non-Uniform will be elected per year. Guidelines for eligibility are:
UNIFORM — Service time of three seasons and a two-year waiting period following retirement from MLB.
NON-UNIFORM — Can include ownership, scouts, broadcasters, media and front office personnel.
The Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame, which honors players, coaches and off-field personnel who have contributed to the organization's growth and success since the Twin Cities broke into the major leagues in 1961, was created as part of the club's 40th Season Celebration in 2000. The inaugural class of Twins Hall of Famers, inducted on August 12, 2000, included Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, Tony Oliva, Kent Hrbek, Kirby Puckett and Calvin Griffith. The 2001 class included Herb Carneal and Jim Kaat while Bert Blyleven and Tom Kelly were inducted in 2002. The late Bob Allison and Bob Casey were inducted in 2003.
Voting online for the Twins Hall of Fame began last Friday in conjunction with TwinsFest, and ends on Friday, February 13. The Twins Hall of Fame Class of 2004 will be announced shortly after the balloting has concluded.
