Alpha Kappa Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi join to give

It is better to give than to receive. On Thursday, Dec. 18, Maxfield Elementary students received gift cards from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Alumni Chapter who partnered with alumni from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. The organizations donated $1,150.00 worth of gift cards to stores such as Target, Cub, Rainbow, and Wal-Mart. The purpose of the giving was to help students and their families with the purchase of gifts and basic necessities during the holiday season.

Maxfield Elementary has a history of producing talented leaders. As full circle proof of the effective learning that takes place at Maxfield, many of the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha expressed their longtime community lineage, and many of those roads led back to Maxfield. To see this convergence of school community past and present provides an excellent framework to understand the importance of this giving.

A report on the current state of the school from Assistant Principal Johnnie M. Barber and St. Paul Public Schools Coordinator Kristy Pierce suggests two things: 1.This is the front line of our communities fight to gain footing during the current national movements (good and bad), in addition to footing in re-establishing the legacy of success. 2. There is an extreme wealth of brilliant and eager young girls and boys who are ready to accept every morsel of wisdom and knowledge thrown their way.

This coming year Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrates their 100th Anniversary, and everyone in the Twin Cities should look forward to their many event pillars including: The Ebony Fashion Fair, and the “Loving the Skin I’m In” program with the YWCA. The Delta Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha has been part of the Twin Cities since 1948. Joining then in rich local history, Kappa Alpha Psi has been established in Minnesota since 1924.
