Bridging Inc., a Twin Cities non-profit organization that distributes free furniture and household goods to people in need, recently launched its pick up program for residents in the seven county area of Minneapolis, St. Paul and surrounding suburbs.
Donors are still invited to drop off their items at either the Bloomington (201 W. 87th St.) or Roseville (1633 Terrace Drive) warehouse Monday through Saturday. However, there is now an option to have donations picked up. There is a minimum fee of $75 for this service. These fees help cover the hard costs of gasoline, truck upkeep and repair, warehouse overhead and more.
“There are many other organizations that offer free pick up service, however those organizations typically sell the items picked up to generate the revenue to operate their programs,” said Ron Osterbauer, Executive Director of Bridging. “Bridging gives away the items free of charge our clients, so this fee simply covers the cost of the pick up service.”
Bridging relies heavily on items donated by area residents and businesses to redistribute to others in the community in need. More than 60% of the items distributed by Bridging facilities to clients are obtained through residential donations, so the generosity of individuals is instrumental in the ability for Bridging to continue its services.
Over 130 families per week shop at the two Bridging facilities in Bloomington and Roseville. Each family is able to shop for the necessary items to make their house into a home, including furniture, beds, bedding, kitchen items and more.
Bridging Inc. provides families in need with the equivalent of 15 semis of furniture each week, keeping many of the items out of local landfills.
