Rep. Keith Ellison and Sen. Al Franken said the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) decision to retain the Minneapolis Multifamily housing office means continued financing, mortgage insurance and operating assistance to a variety of multi-family apartments, nursing homes and manufactured home communities.
“The announcement guarantees Minneapolis will continue to be a national model for helping families find an affordable place to call home,” said Ellison. “The decision to keep the Minneapolis Multifamily Housing (MMH) office open is a huge victory for our city and for families who need rental housing options that include nursing homes, cooperatives, apartments and affordable housing for the elderly, people with disabilities and low-income families.
According to Ellison, the Minneapolis Multifamily Housing office is one of the top loan producers in the country, building more than 6,000 units a year and helping families around the region find appropriate rental housing. MMH serves those in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
“Excellence is being rewarded. The people who run the Minneapolis Multifamily Housing office are the best at what they do,” said Ellison. “Keeping the Multifamily Housing office ensures Minneapolis will continue to be a leader in enabling us to provide more workforce housing and still meet the needs for affordable housing for the elderly, people with disabilities and low-income families. The decision to retain our high performing office will make our community more vital and equitable.”
The state’s junior senator agrees.
“I’m glad that, after my urging, the administration decided to keep the Minneapolis Multi-Family Field Office open to continue its work for the people of Minnesota,” said Franken. “The Minneapolis office ranks among the top in the nation, and it simply made no sense to move those resources farther away from the people it serves.”
