Rec Plus+ offers affordable school-age childcare

Working parents still searching for an affordable quality school-age childcare program need look no further! The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB) offers Recreation Plus+ at fifteen neighborhood recreation centers for children ages five through twelve. Working parents still searching for an affordable quality school-age childcare program need look no further! The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB) offers Recreation Plus+ at fifteen neighborhood recreation centers for children ages five through twelve. Rec Plus+ operates Monday-Friday before and after school, on school release days and during the summer, depending on sites. Activities include games and sports, arts and crafts, homework help, field trips and nutritious snacks.

Rec Plus+ focuses on three goals:
1. Provides parents with affordable recreation-based school-age care in local park centers.
2. Enables children to experience positive benefits of a balanced recreation program.
3. Provides a safe environment for children which promotes healthy physical and social development.

The 2007-08 program runs Monday-Friday through June 11 at the following rec centers:

  • Hiawatha - 612-370-4952

  • Keewaydin - 612-370-4956

  • Kenwood - 612-370-4941

Children can join the program any time during the school year, based on site availability. Details and dates of the summer program will be announced in late winter 2008.

Program Components:
  • Before School 6:30 - 9:30 a.m. - Informal self-directed play.

  • Kindergarten - Available at Waite and Matthews; runs from the end of morning kindergarten until the end of the school day. Teacher-initiated programs and structured self-directed activities.

  • After School Early Release 1:30 - 6:00 p.m. - Opportunities include participation in two park classes per day.

  • After School 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. - Opportunities include participation in two park classes per day.

  • School Release Days 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Available at Lynnhurst, Hiawatha, Matthews, Pershing and Waite. Enrollment optional on a first-come first-serve basis. Day-long recreation programs with occasional field trips.

  • Summer 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Opportunities include swim lessons, at least one field trip per week and options to participate in two park classes per day.

Fees are based on choice of program. Fee waivers can be requested upon availability by qualified Minneapolis residents.
