New civil rights-themed playground dedicated at MLK Park

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park Aug. 22 to celebrate the opening of a new civil rights‐themed playground.

Numerous speakers, music and a ceremonial ribbon‐cutting helped dedicate the unique and inspiring play area during the fifth annual Celebrate Our Beloved Community event. The new playground mixes in numerous educational opportunities detailing people, places and events that helped shape African-Americans’ struggle for civil rights.

‘Your Honor, don’t send that child to jail, give him to us’

Brief background — JDAI stands for Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative. In 2005, community elders recognized secure detention (kiddy jail) as the entry gate to prison pipelines and mobilized an attack with phenomenal and measurable success. In short they said, “Instead of jailing low level juvenile offenders, let community serve as an alternative.” The annual intake plummeted in the Ramsey County juvenile detention by 70 percent in just five years. Yes, between 2005 and 2010, Ramsey County Juvenile detention dropped from more than 4,000 children per year to less than 1,000, with no corresponding increase in juvenile crime.

Lantern Lighting Celebration at Lakewood Cemetery

lantern-lighting-2012-30On September 19 from 5:00-7:30 p.m., Lakewood Cemetery invites all members of the community to a Lantern Lighting Celebration, a new and special event to honor those who have passed away. Come decorate your own candlelit floating lantern with words of remembrance, and gather with friends, family and other guests to release your lanterns together on Lakewood’s lake at dusk. Take in the beauty of the historic grounds of Lakewood while enjoying live music by Jack Klatt & the Cat Swingers, trolley rides from the Minnesota Streetcar Museum, food from a local food truck and entertainment for all ages.
