North Community High School senior Shanaye Mitchell has been on the A or B honor roll since 7th grade. A prolific writer, Mitchell has won awards for her poetry and plays. She is president of North Community High School's career development group.

daughter of Judge Pamela and Albert Alexander, attends Edina High School. She is a National Achievement Scholar and honor student involved in the International Thespian Society, Edina Thespian Club, Images Art Magazine and has been Stage Manager, Director and Tech Crew for many theatrical productions. April has received numerous academic honors and will attend Hampton, Howard or Fisk Universities. She plans on majoring in Journalism and hopes to become a theatre critic or writer.

The issue of violence, particularly gang and drug violence, becomes more urgent and difficult when we are talking about African American teens and young adults. Young people do not start their lives wanting to be drug dealers and gang bangers.

MTW preschool builds on Phyllis Wheatley’s 82 years of excellence

Kindergarten readiness and early childhood literacy rates statewide still leave room for improvement, with only about fifty percent of all children ready to start Kindergarten. According to the Fall 2005 Northside Student Beginning Kindergarten Assessment Results prepared by MPS Research, Evaluation and Assessment, only forty-two percent of kindergarteners in North Minneapolis are on track to read well by third grade.
