Obama Administration must prosecute former President Bush & Former Vice President Cheney

It seems that hardly a week goes by that some major new revelation does not emerge which justifies the arrest and prosecution of former President Bush, former Vice President Cheney and other top officials of the disgraced Bush administration. It is becoming increasingly clear that Bush and Cheney and their sycophants lied, tortured, broke both U.S. and international law and now it seems illegally assassinated people for eight inglorious years.

The illegal assassinations revelation emerged last week when Democratic leaders in Congress began planning hearings on reports that former Vice President Cheney specifically ordered the CIA to conceal from Congress the existence of a highly secret so-called anti-terrorist program.

Secrecy oaths prevent the Democrats from providing specifics but developments in Washington, D.C. and New York City strongly suggest that the “highly secret” program was a special operations assassination program whose members traveled the world murdering people Bush and/or Cheney deemed a threat.

Compiling information for a new book, respected investigative journalist Seymour Hersh last March described the program this way: “It is an executive assassination ring essentially, and it’s been going on and on and on. Under President Bush’s authority, they’ve been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving.”

Hersh and others say Cheney oversaw the program. Further, it was illegal for Cheney to withhold existence of the program from Congress.

This latest revelation is just another indictment of the Bush administration. It began its two terms by essentially lying the nation into a war in Iraq - a nation which had done absolutely nothing to harm the United States. Every justification the administration gave for the war has turned out to be false. There were no weapons of mass destruction; Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with the 911 attack on the U.S.; and Iraq was not attempting to reconstitute its nuclear program.

Next, without any court order and thus in violation of American law, the administration began a massive spying program on American citizens intercepting mail and bugging telephones. It opened secret prisons in Europe and the Middle East. It engaged in so-called “renditions” in which people were simply snatched off the street, thrown into those prisons and tortured. Top officials, including Black former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, authorized torture and mistreatment.

The list of infamy goes on and on. And now we learn there was a secret program of assassinations.

The Obama administration cannot allow these practitioners of illegality, immorality and evil to go unpunished. Congressional hearings should begin immediately and the government should move to indict for all verifiable wrongs. The indictments should target everyone from the soldiers and agents who carried out the torture, illegal spying and the assassinations to the high level officials, including Bush and Cheney, who authorized them.
