Concert on ice awakens students’ racial awareness

Ridder Ice Arena on the U of M campus will come to life on the morning of September 17 as more than 1,000 students from high schools throughout the metro area fill the seats to participate in an educational experience --- exploring their own racial and cultural identity and the impact toxic conditioning (or branding) has had on the creation of their own personal identity.

The African American Adoption Agency (AAAA) has received a $53,350 grant from the Community Action and Field of Interest Fund of the Minneapolis Foundation. This grant will support “A Community Caring for its Children” program.

Annual fall gathering held Sept. 19 and 20 at North West Company Fur Post

Celebrate the season with a 19th-century fall gathering of Ojibwe, voyageurs and fur traders. Watch as contestants vie for the title of the best all-around voyageur with tests of strength and cunning. Listen to traditional music, participate in children's activities, discover camp life and visit with the historical merchants. A festive dance at 6:30 pm on Saturday is a highlight of the weekend. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the North West Company Fur Post. The Fall Gathering Weekend is held Saturday, Sept. 19 from 10 am to 9 pm and Sunday, Sept. 20 from noon to 4 pm. Cost of the event is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and college students, $5 for children ages 6-17 and free for children age 5 and under and MHS members.

The Minneapolis Public Schools will welcome students in grades 1 – 12 back to school on Tues., Sept. 1. Class for kindergarten students will begin on Thurs., Sept. 3.

Minneapolis approves free wireless service for agencies working to bridge digital divide

In its continuing efforts to make Minneapolis a wireless city that bridges the digital divide, the City Council approved 51 applications for Wireless Community accounts, which are free wireless Internet accounts for non-profit organizations that provide free computer access to the public. The free accounts will be good through 2010.
