A Cleveland Connects, Community Cooks, workshop and dinner was recently hosted by the Cleveland Neighborhood Association (CNA).


Cleveland Connects, led by Appetite for Change was held on at the Christ English Lutheran Church, 3210 Oliver Ave. N. Appetite for Change is a community based organization in North Minneapolis that engages communities to eat healthier while building community connections.

Bill Ashford: BilyRay’s Old Style Gourmet BBQ SauceBill Ashford, Owner of BilyRay's Old Style Gourmet Barbeque Sauce, recently visited the West Broadway Business and Area Coalition (WBC) office and shared a sample of his gourmet sauce, as well as its history.

Upon tasting the incredible sauce, WBC staff realized we would be doing a major disservice to the community if we did not get the word out about this superior product – not to mention its inspiring beginning.


"About two years ago I started having people taste it and got some positive feedback," said Ashford who has produced 185 cases. "The recipe comes from my father. I've been perfecting the taste for over 20 years."

Program strengthens civic engagement
The last Friday in July marked a very special day for the students in the Public Allies program. It was a day of celebration, promise and growth for its graduating class.

Public Allies mission is to advance new leadership to strengthen communities through nonprofits and civic participation. Its goal is to propel African-Americans into more leadership positions within the nonprofit sector. It was created in 1992 by Vanessa Kirsch and Katrina Browne, with its first program launched in Washington, D.C. It was not until 2010 however, that Public Allies would launch in Minneapolis. Public Allies training is supported by the Urban Institute for Service and operated by Pillsbury United Communities, a nonprofit organization working to create choice, change and connection for people from all walks of life.

Community unites to celebrate family

Minneapolis Urban League hosts 23rd Annual Family Day at Plymouth and Penn Ave.

Waves and cheers; drummers and dancers; floats and fancy cars were just some of the sights from the Minneapolis Urban League Family Day Parade held on Saturday, August 25, to kick off the 23rd Annual Family Day event. Thousands of twin cities residents turned out for the fun, fellowship, community resources, and stellar entertainment. Even the rain could not dampen the spirits of the people who came out to celebrate.
