The Martin Luther King, Jr. legacyThe Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Advisory Council, and Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board hosted public officials and community residents at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 4055 Nicollet Ave. S. on August 28th to celebrate the unveiling of the MLK Memorial in Washington, DC and the  South Minneapolis launch of initiatives to uplift Dr. King’s legacy.

Somali gourmet event supports famine relief in Horn of Africa

Somali gourmet event supports famine relief in Horn of AfricaSadia Abdi, owner of Sadia's Gourmet Sauce, threw a Tasting Party on Sunday, August 14 to celebrate four years in business by sharing her home cooking with customers. Abdi was the first Somali woman to bottle and sell a food product in the U.S.

The Celebration was held at The Uptown Farmer’s Market (29th Street & Lyndale Avenue, Minneapolis) from 12-4pm.

Sadia’s Gourmet Tasting Party offered free servings of traditional Somali foods, kids’ activities,  and sales on Sadia’s Gourmet Sauce. The party also featured live music from local bands such as the Cactus Blossoms, the Southwest High School Klezmer Band and local Somali guitarist & poet Abdul Qadir.

Champion promotes Nice Ride as health benefit

Nice Ride is a non-profit organization that provides a subscription based bike sharing service that provides a fun and convenient transportation option.  On August 11, Mayor R.T. Rybak and Rev. Bobby Champion (DFL-58B) joined North Minneapolis residents in a bike ride to celebrate expansion of Nice Ride Minnesota in North Minneapolis.  The celebration was held at the Urban Research Outreach Engagement Center at 2100 Plymouth Ave N.

“Floating islands” promote water stewardship

“Floating islands” promote water stewardshipThe American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) launched a campaign to raise public awareness and understanding of the landscape architecture profession with the installation of “floating islands” on August 17, 2011. The Minnesota Chapter (ASLA-MN) undertook one of the most ambitious events in the nation by launching seven “floating islands” on Spring Lake, an impaired lake in Minneapolis.

Turning Point: Non-profits helping non-profits

Non-profits such as The Neighborhood Hub, Prayer Center and Turning Point, practice continuous efforts to assist tornado victims with basic necessities, such as food, water, clothing and hygiene products.  On August 8, Turning Point held a fund drive to deliver food and clothing for those still in need due to the tornado to other non-profits such as The Neighborhood Hub and The Prayer Center.

Ramadan Reflections – Part 1

First and foremost, I would like to wish everyone Ramadan Mubarak (Blessed Ramadan). My initial feelings about Ramadan were somewhat negative. The thought of no food and no water for 16 hours wasn’t pleasant especially with the record temperatures set this summer.  

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar. It is considered the holiest month as it was during Ramadan in which the Holy Koran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him).  During Ramadan, Muslims observe Sawm (Fast) from dawn to dusk.

Minnesota citizens redistricting commission public meetings

Statewide commission members are seeking community input on redistricting for the state of Minnesota.  Draw the Line Minnesota, believes that those district boundaries, which can hold communities together or split them apart and ultimately impact our ability to choose meaningful representation, are best drawn by the people living in them. Citizen Commission Hearings will be held all across the state allowing members of the commission to learn directly from the people what your community looks like.
