Discussions focus on heritage preservation in Northside industrial areas

Minneapolis Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED) department says it will hold a meeting about heritage preservation in the industrial areas along the Mississippi River in North Minneapolis.

Open Arms of Minnesota announces successful capital campaign for new building

Open Arms of Minnesota has successfully completed an $8.1 million capital campaign for the construction of its new building located at 2600 Bloomington Avenue South in the Phillips Neighborhood of Minneapolis. The ambitious project commenced in May 2007 in order to expand Open Arms ability to serve nutritious meals to more people who are suffering from illness at no cost to the client. Currently, Open Arms is on track to serve 310,000 meals for 2009. With the new facility, the non-profit will be able to double the annual meals it serves. Tours of the new facility were held last week on World AIDS Day.

MPS ‘Check it Out’ chess competition winners announced

The Minneapolis Public Schools hosted a district-wide chess tournament at North High School on November 21. Students in grades K through 12 competed in the day-long competition and top finishers in each division were awarded trophies.

Saint Paul, Minn - The Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) Board of Education has finalized its schedule for the superintendent candidate interviewing process, including a three-day schedule for interviewing and introducing each finalist to the SPPS staff and community Nov. 16, 18 and 19. The Board of Education plans to name up to three finalists on Saturday, Nov. 14, after completing its semi-finalist interviews. The semi-finalist candidates are expected to be announced the evening of Nov. 11.

Phyllis Wheatley Community Center marked its 85th Anniversary with a celebration on Friday, October 23 at Augsburg College’s Christensen Center in Minneapolis. Honorary co-hosts Sharon Sayles-Belton, Al McFarlane, Don and Sondra Samuels, Mary Merrill-Anderson, Art Rolnick, Annie Young, Harry Davis, Jr., Phyllis Wheatley Board Members and Senior Alumni were all present to celebrate the organization’s legacy of service to children and families in the community.
The evening included live music by SLI’JE and event sponsors included Insight News and Fredrikson & Byron, PA.

In a time when resources are dwindling for children living in the Eastside neighborhood of St. Paul, support from Target Corp. has allowed the Payne Ave. Salvation Army to ramp up its outreach efforts.
