Neighbors helping neighbors—to break into vacant houses

Poverty rights activists broke into at least a dozen vacant Minneapolis buildings this week and helped homeless families move in.

Celebration honors Quincy De’Shawn

A Celebration of Life honoring “Q-the Blacksmith”, Quincy De’Shawn Smith, Sr., and celebrating his birthday and exceptional life is scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 12 noon to 6 p.m., at the Seed Academy & Harvest Preparatory School located at 1300 Olson Memorial Highway in North Minneapolis. Smith died tragically on December 9, 2008. He would have been 25 on his birthday April 2nd.

Panel will discuss Civil Rights activism and the enduring legacies of individual action

Can one person make a difference for civil rights? A panel consisting of a 1960s "Freedom Rider," community leaders who are longtime civil rights activists, and area teens will present "Civil Rights Then and Now:  Actions and Legacies," a discussion of their experiences as champions of civil rights, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5 at Hennepin County Library - Brookdale, 6125 Shingle Creek Parkway, Brooklyn Center. Admission is free.

Rites of Passage event to celebrate, recognize African American males

At a time when so many negative images of young Black men are featured in the media, a local effort is mentoring and celebrating those who are headed in positive directions. That’s the 11th Annual Rites of Passage, set for 6 p.m. March 7 at the Marriott Southwest in Minnetonka.

Three longtime champions of workplace diversity will be honored at the 21th annual Multicultural Forum on Workplace Diversity, a two-day national training conference that will be held March 3 and 4 at the St. Paul RiverCentre.
