Her lawn is meticulously maintained. Bright flowers accent her home's walkway. Inside, there is a stunning custom mural of an African village painted on a living room wall.

Minneapolis Urban League hosts 23rd Annual Family Day at Plymouth and Penn Ave.
Waves and cheers; drummers and dancers; floats and fancy cars were just some of the sights from the Minneapolis Urban League Family Day Parade held on Saturday, August 25, to kick off the 23rd Annual Family Day event. Thousands of twin cities residents turned out for the fun, fellowship, community resources, and stellar entertainment. Even the rain could not dampen the spirits of the people who came out to celebrate.
Visitors to the West Broadway Farmers Market can check out new features this year. You can try out an exercise, watch a cooking demonstration and take home the recipe. Those who walk or ride bikes to the market can enter a raffle.
KAIROS dancing heart, the pioneering, national award winning research-based performing arts program for elders by KAIROS ALIVE!, is featured in the new 2-part public television documentary, Arts and the Mind, airing on PBS stations across the U.S. and available streaming online after September 12 at pbs.org. The group gathered to remember victims through an event called Gospel & Jazz on the Lawn on Sat., Aug. 18 at the Gardens of Alafia Place, a new non-profit in North Minneapolis. The event featured performances by Robert Robinson and Sam Reeves & Friends.

Twin Cities residents will have a special opportunity. The Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) will be holding its national conference in Downtown Minneapolis, and local residents will be able to explore this amazing group first hand. I attended my first CCDA conference almost 20 years ago in Jackson, Mississippi, and this single event opened the door to awareness and perspectives that have challenged and molded my entire life since.
