Saint Paul, MN ?Latina girls between the ages of 9 and 14 are invited to celebrate their heritage at Soy Unica! Soy Latina Friday, Nov. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saint Paul Public Schools is hosting the free event, which will feature speakers, workshops, lunch and a dance at Humboldt Senior High School (30 East Baker St., Saint Paul).

Soy Unica! Soy Latina! will be a celebration of Latina girls' heritage aimed at encouraging girls to feel good about themselves. It will feature national and local speakers from a variety of professions who will share their experiences growing up, and succeeding, as Latinas. Workshops will focus on building self-esteem, developing decision-making skills and encouraging assertiveness. Following the workshops, a dance will be held
at the school.

By introducing Latinas to positive role models and empowering the girls with decision-making skills, organizers hope to begin to fend off problems that plague Latina girls in Saint Paul. "Too many of our girls are falling prey to alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use and teenage pregnancy," said Sylvia Perez, one of the event's organizers from Saint Paul Public Schools.

"We want to show the girls that there is a world of opportunities out there if they avoid these negative activities."

Saint Paul Public Schools will send home with girls a flyer/registration form for parents to fill out. Limited space is available and the registration deadline is Friday, Nov. 1. Registration forms can be faxed to (651) 379-4295 or mailed to:
