Northside preschool launches project to promote Montessori early education in low-income communities

Bright Water Montessori School (BWMS) will lead an outreach program in North Minneapolis to educate community members about the benefits of Montessori pre-school education and to promote the start-up of new programs. BWMS will also provide technical assistance to interested organizations or individuals as they navigate the complex process of starting a new preschool program. The project will provide high-quality early education to as many as 200 preschool students each year as well as 40 new jobs that will stay in the community for the long term.

He also coordinates the Black Student Association Connections class and runs the ALC after school credit recovery program. He tutors students after school and on weekends. He is often asked by the senior class to give the commencement address and rumor has it he has been voted in for this June's ceremony.

Minneapolis Board of Education selects Bernadeia Johnson as next superintendent

The Minneapolis Board of Education at its meeting on February 9 selected Bernadeia Johnson, current deputy superintendent of the Minneapolis Public Schools, as next Superintendent of Schools. Her selection comes at the end of a process that began in July 2009, when current Superintendent Bill Green announced his decision not to seek renewal of his contract when his term concludes on June 30, 2010.

BEIJING (Feb. 9, 2010) – A National Urban League delegation of more than 40 prominent businesspeople, educators, public officials and community leaders, led by Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial and Blair Taylor, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Urban League, took part in a historic cultural and trade mission to Beijing that not only opened the door for future investment and business opportunities between African-Americans and China, but secured two education partnerships before the trip was even over.

Students ready for college but need more industry support to grow programs

To help more African Americans enter the information technology (IT) workforce, the CompTIA Educational Foundation provided 239 African Americans with free IT training and certification last year, and another 19 received merit award scholarships to help them further their educational goals.
African Americans are finding new tech career success, although they are still somewhat under-represented in the IT workforce.The Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2008 calculated that approximately 574,000 African Americans worked in IT and related fields. African Americans make up roughly 12.5 percent of the entire U.S. population, compared to only 8.6 percent of the IT workforce.

This opportunity as been made available through the generosity of the Minneapolis Public Schools Contact Alternative Office. Phyllis Productions provides performance arts training to the students.
