Students ready for college but need more industry support to grow programs

To help more African Americans enter the information technology (IT) workforce, the CompTIA Educational Foundation provided 239 African Americans with free IT training and certification last year, and another 19 received merit award scholarships to help them further their educational goals.
African Americans are finding new tech career success, although they are still somewhat under-represented in the IT workforce.The Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2008 calculated that approximately 574,000 African Americans worked in IT and related fields. African Americans make up roughly 12.5 percent of the entire U.S. population, compared to only 8.6 percent of the IT workforce.

The City Inc High Schools has offered its students an after school performance arts program for the past two years. This opportunity as been made available through the generosity of the Minneapolis Public Schools Contact Alternative Office. Phyllis Productions provides performance arts training to the students.

Ahmed Dagane chosen Metropolitan State outstanding student

A Burnsville man has been selected an outstanding student at Metropolitan State University. Ahmed Dagane, chosen fall semester, was among 920 students receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Metropolitan State’s 85th commencement exercises on December 15.

Area student named to Dunwoody College of Technology Dean's List

LaRae R. Heard of Robbinsdale, MN was named to the Dunwoody College of Technology, Fall Quarter 2009 Dean's List. Students named to the Dean's List are recognized for outstanding academic achievement by earning a 3.5 grade point average or higher in 12 or more credits for the quarter. Dunwoody College has built a national and international reputation as a leader in technical education for nearly a century. Heard, a 2008 graduate of North Community High School, is in the Web Programming Program at Dunwoody and will graduate June 2010.

Edison High School receives International Baccalaureate authorization

Edison High School has received authorization to begin offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme beginning in September 2010. The IB Programme is an international educational program that is designed to increase all students’ learning with a global perspective.
