A dreamer not deferred + a devoted charter school = a good pair

What do a visionary and a bound and determined south Minneapolis charter school have in common? They are joined at the hips. Chrystal Deramus, a 21-year-old mother of three, said before her five-year-old daughter and two younger sons graduate from high school, she will be a pediatrician. The Minnesota Internship Center (MNIC - pronounced "min-nic") is steadfastly fixed on helping Deramus’ dream come true.

A pilot project launched in the Phillips Community in early September 2009 designed for African American and Somali, child care providers’ grandparents, uncles and aunts, reaching 50 children. Transportation, books, snacks, field trips, library visits, take home activities and visits, assessments, adult training classes, are available at no cost. Instructors are skilled and certified working with families and children three days a week 3 hours each.

10 MPS students named National Merit semifinalists

Ten Minneapolis Public Schools students on September 16 were named semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Samuel J. Calvit and Tyler Mahony of South High School and Ashley R. Bielinski, Isabella N. Dawis, Caroline A. Lauth, Mikayla M. MacNally, Rose E. Milavitz, Christopher J. Riddle, Ruth L. Styles and Mark B. Ulrich of Southwest High School are among approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

In Minnesota, the demand for college-educated workers is forecasted to exceed the supply available to employers in the next few years due in large part to decreasing numbers of high school graduates and the lower rate at which low-income students are accessing college. However, Minnesota students, administrators, community leaders and colleges prove this trend can be reversed in their interviews and stories shared in a new documentary, College IS Possible, co-produced by Twin Cities Public Television’s MN Channel and Admission Possible. MUL Summer Construction Program prepares youth for careers

After 10 weeks of training, 14 youth recently graduated from the Minneapolis Urban League LEAP program, a summer construction internship program for city of Minneapolis high school students. The program is designed to prepare them in careers in the building and construction trades. The LEAP program is in its 11th year and is a partnership between the City of Minneapolis, local trade unions, employers, and the Minneapolis Urban League.
