MUL Summer Construction Program prepares youth for careersAfter 10 weeks of training, 14 youth recently graduated from the Minneapolis Urban League LEAP program, a summer construction internship program for city of Minneapolis high school students.  The program is designed to prepare them in careers in the building and construction trades.  The LEAP program is in its 11th year and is a partnership between the City of Minneapolis, local trade unions, employers, and the Minneapolis Urban League.

MPS to hold Changing School Options town hall meetings

The Minneapolis Public Schools will hold a series of community town hall meetings during the weeks of September 7 and 14 on Changing School Options, a comprehensive plan the MPS administration will submit to the Board of Education on September 1 to create financial sustainability and build a new foundation for academic success. At the meetings, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about school changes recommended for the 2010-2011 school year, ask questions and share comments.

Peer mentoring works for girls of African descent

Peer mentoring works for girls of African descentAs we grow old we come to understand that it is our young people of today that have the possibility to make a better tomorrow.  During the 2008-2009 school year, WE WIN Institute partnered with Cooper High School in the Robbinsdale district to create a mentoring program called, “Women of Distinction,” for girls of African descent.  The great need for a partnership of this kind revolves around the fact that African American students have the fastest growing failure rate in the state of Minnesota with only 38 percent graduating from high school.  Minnesota has the worst graduation rate for African Americans in the country.   The purpose of the program is for junior and senior high school girls to mentor freshman and sophomores so that they will stay on track academically, socially and psychologically.
