Minnesota to receive $5.5 million to continue efforts to turn around lowest-performing schools

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that Minnesota will receive $5.5 million to continue efforts to turn around its persistently lowest achieving schools through the Education Department's School Improvement Grants (SIG) program. Ten additional states also will receive this continuation funding: Connecticut—$3.6 million; Kentucky—$7.7 million; Maryland—$6.8 million; Mississippi—$6.1 million; New Mexico—$4.1 million; Ohio—$20.2 million; South Carolina—$7.4 million; South Dakota—$1.5 million; Utah—$3.4 million; and West Virginia—$3.3 million.

Boys and Girls Club of America Midwest Youth of the Year, Mai Tong Yang, plans to dream big as she starts a new chapter in her life – college.

After years of dedication, volunteering and work with the Boys and Girls Club, 19-year-old Yang was acknowledged this past year by getting the organization’s title of Midwest Youth of the Year.

Quest Academy Charter School in St. Louis Park to close

Pillsbury United Communities (PUC), the charter authorizer for Quest Academy in St. Louis Park, says it plans to terminate Quest Academy's contract because it has failed to meet generally accepted standards of fiscal management. If terminated, the school will close by the end of the 2012-2013 academic year, and Pillsbury United Communities' staff will proactively work with Quest Academy to ensure minimal disruption to its 54 students in 7th through 12th grades.
