Adult learner Edith Tlaseca achieves graduation; focuses on next phase of her education journey

The Adult Academic Program (AAP) of Robbinsdale Area Schools held its annual Adult Basic Education graduation on May 29. This year, AAP has served over 135 adult students helping them earn a GED or a high school diploma. Now these students can move on to the next phase of their educational journey which may be more schooling or job training. AAP students have all overcome a variety of life obstacles in order to achieve their diploma.

During the April 23 school board meeting, Robbinsdale Area Schools Superintendent Aldo Sicoli recommended Melissa Jackson as the new principal of Forest Elementary School, replacing longtime administrator Connie Grumdahl who retired at the end of 2013.

Is Malcolm X relevant today?
Ask most young people if they know who Malcolm X is and they will usually respond in the affirmative. The first annual Minnesota Malcolm X Conference, which will be held on Saturday, May 17 at North Community High School, 1500 James Ave., N., from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., was organized to educate people – especially young people –about Malcolm X and why he is still relevant today.
Dr. Bernadeia H. Johnson, superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS), announced last week that former MPS administrator and teacher, Rhonda Dean will lead Washburn High School as its new principal, beginning July 1, 2014. After a national search, MPS selected a candidate with ties to Minneapolis.
