Four new directors join Minneapolis school board

The Minneapolis Board of Education elected new officers for chair, vice chair, treasurer and clerk. Alberto Monserrate will serve as chair, Jenny Arneson as vice chair, Richard Mammen as clerk and Rebecca Gagnon as treasurer. The school board voted on the nominations after swearing in four new board members during its annual meeting Tuesday, January 8, bringing the total number of directors to nine.

In early July, when newly elected Minneapolis schoolboard member Tracine Asberry found out she'd be running unopposed in District 6,, she was elated to get a head start on contributing to schools and communities. Her district had been the most competitive, with four candidates in the running. After Asberry received an endorsement from the DFL, the other three dropped out.

Ten years ago, Vance Holmes' world was turned topsy-turvy.

His mother had died unexpectedly from an aneurysm. Then several months later, Holmes' brother was shot and murdered on the streets of McKeesport, Penn., close to Pittsburgh.

Hope strengthens reading, writing, and leadership

Every Saturday, about 50 volunteers come to Hope Community center to volunteer in the tutoring program with students from different backgrounds. The children from 6-9 years old are mostly from Somalia or Mexican immigrant families. For two-hour sessions in the morning and afternoon, volunteers sit down with students doing reading and writing together.
