Admission Possible year-end graduation celebration Largest group of students yet complete two-year college prep program

In this busy season of proms and graduations, awards nights and athletic banquets, more than 1,000 Twin Cities students marked their calendars for the 8th Annual Admission Possible Year-End Graduation Celebration which took place Saturday, May 30, at the University of Minnesota’s Ted Mann Concert Hall.

Of the 620 Twin Cities-area seniors who participated in Admission Possible’s two-year college preparatory program, 96% of them have already been admitted to at least one college for next year, after working steadily to reach important deadlines, arrange for financial aid, receive admission letters, and make an informed decision. For the many Admission Possible students who will be the first members of their families to attend college, this is an accomplishment well worth a celebration.

Nonprofit organizations from Minneapolis and St. Paul joined together to sponsor a poetry and spoken word Contest for students. The collaboration between WE WIN Institute, Arts Us, and Illuminadas Performing Arts lead to a dynamic event on Thursday, May 14. The contest was held at Dunning Recreational Center in St. Paul.

Smokey Robinson delivers commencement address at Berklee College of Music

Boston, MA--More than 850 graduates received degrees Friday at Berklee College of Music's 2009 Commencement, held at the Agganis Arena at Boston University. Berklee President Roger H. Brown presented honorary doctor of music degrees to legendary Motown singer/songwriter Smokey Robinson; versatile, enduring and multimillion-selling singer Linda Ronstadt; Dominican singer/ songwriter superstar Juan Luis Guerra; and award-winning producer and sound engineer George Massenburg. Robinson delivered the commencement address to the graduating class and more than 4,000 guests.

Bright Water Elementary awarded $250,000

Bright Water Elementary, a new Montessori charter school in North Minneapolis, has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Walton Family Foundation. Grant funds, which will be used during the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 school years, will be used to hire additional teaching and support staff to ensure that all students are performing at or better than grade level.

The Givens Foundation has made the Twin Cities come alive with its NOMMO series. They host African American giants who enrich Minnesota with the power of words through poetry and literature. NOMMO is a Dogon word meaning the “magic power of the word.” The Series celebrates the supremacy of the word through conversations with nationally recognized authors who demonstrate the brilliance of African American literature.

Dunwoody partners with North Memorial for Radiologic Technologist Program

Dunwoody College of Technology announced North Memorial Medical Center will transfer program sponsorship of its radiologic technologist training program to Dunwoody, which will begin offering a degree program in September 2009.
