Mental illness from a sibling's perspective

Even though I have always known that something was a “little off” with my sister, learning that she had a mental illness was devastating. This is something I hear many times from folks in the community about their loved ones.  As Black people, we don’t mind saying our family member is “a little off” or “a little crazy,” but when our loved one gets an actual diagnosis, it becomes real. There are many questions we ask ourselves:  Will I get sick, too? Can I pass this on to my children? What will my friends think of me? Will the church think that I am not a Christian?

Freeport West launching new housing initiative supporting teen mothers

Freeport West , a 39-year-old nonprofit providing services to at-risk, runaway and homeless youth,  recently announced that in partnership with Freeport Saint Paul Youth Center, it will now offer secured housing in Saint Paul.  The house dedicated to assisting parenting youth and those impacted by domestic violence is made possible by the City of Saint Paul and the United Way.

A request on Dr. Martin Luther King Day Hello, my name is Jennifer Jones Austin. I am a 41 year old mother of two young children. On September 23 of this year, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Just days before I was walking around feeling fine, taking care of my family, going to the gym daily, and working professionally as an advocate for children and families living in poverty. I had no medical history of health problems. Things were good.
