Franken, Rothman praise $1.1 billion health insurance rebate provision

U.S. Sen. Al Franken and Minnesota Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman said recently that a provision in the nation’s health care law, which this year sent $1.1 billion in health insurance rebates to almost 13 million Americans – including 123,000 Minnesotans – had its origin Minnesota.

CDC now recommends all baby boomers receive one-time hepatitis C test

New approach will help avert major increases in liver disease and deaths in the U.S.

All U.S. baby boomers should get a one-time test for the hepatitis C virus, according to final recommendations published today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One in 30 baby boomers – the generation born from 1945 through 1965 – has been infected with hepatitis C, and most don’t know it. Hepatitis C causes serious liver diseases, including liver cancer (the fastest-rising cause of cancer-related deaths), and is the leading cause of liver transplants in the United States.

Minnesota named top state for e-prescribing

Minnesota's strategy to promote electronic-prescribing has resulted in a No. 1 ranking on a national survey.

"E-prescribing has been a collaborative effort in Minnesota, and we want to congratulate the providers, pharmacists, health plans, patient groups, and public health professionals who have all joined together to improve the safety and efficiency of prescribing medicine in Minnesota," said Minnesota Commissioner of Health Dr. Ed Ehlinger.

Clean safe water is the true staff of life

Push aside bread, water is the true "staff of life."  Water, which carries oxygen to our body's cells, makes up more than half of our body weight and we can't live for more than a few days without it.  While our bodies don't get water just from drinking water alone as any fluids we drink contain water as well as certain foods (think juicy peaches or ripe tomatoes), consuming pure, fresh, clean water is vital for our good health.  How can we ensure that our drinking water is safe?
