Lessons from my Pastor

Lessons from my PastorThis month my pastor, Vernell Thomas and First Lady Loretta Thomas will celebrate 47 years of leadership at Greater Saint Paul Church of God in Christ. This noteworthy distinction puts them in a class by themselves. During my 10 years at this south Minneapolis church, I have come to know them as a loving couple that is a model for marriages everywhere. They have imparted in my life in ways that cannot be expressed in words. Here are 4 valuable lessons that I have learned from watching and listening to them.

Letting go of terrible past, moving on

Letting go of terrible past, moving onLet go of old things that won’t allow you to move forward! Stop thinking about what you did in your past, or what someone did to you in the past and move on! I know sometimes it can be hard to do, but for your own well being and to be able to reach your goals, this is something that you should work on daily.

What does it mean to be approachable?

What does it mean to be approachable?Am I approachable?

This question has been asked of me by men and women alike. In most cases, I am thinking, "If you have to ask the question, you may already have your answer." But in some cases, it may be that the person is in the dark of why people don't approach them. Because the propensity for others to approach us can impact our relationships and employability, it is necessary that I address the subject, cause, and effect of being approachable.

Start your week on a positive note

Start your week on a positive noteLet's start this week with positive thoughts.

Let's forget about all of the disappointments of last week and focus on the wonderful things that are in store for us this week. Let's forgive someone who hurt our feelings last week and remember that we are all humans with flaws. Let's complete the projects that we started last week, but decided to put them off for a later date. Let's remember to show gratitude and to say "thank you" when someone helps us out.

Protect your winter landscape from hungry wildlife

Protect your winter landscape from hungry wildlifeThere's no doubt that managing critters in the landscape can be a challenge especially as food supplies start to dwindle. If you are battling with rabbits, deer, groundhogs or other wildlife, don't let down your guard as the growing season begins to wind down.

Don’t let others steal your joy

Don’t let others steal your joyHave you ever let someone steal your joy?

Have you ever been so excited about something and as soon as you told someone about your dreams or plans, they said something negative and then down went your joy? Why do we allow people to do this to us? It is usually someone very close to us who we think should be as excited as we are. The problem with this is that we have to remember that just because we are excited about something, doesn't mean that they will be also.
