Soul Daddy: America’s next great restaurant opens at Mall of America

Soul Daddy: America’s next great restaurant opens at Mall of AmericaSelf-employed caterer/cook Jamawn J. Woods and his Soul Daddy concept last Sunday, May 1, reigned supreme as winner of NBC Televison’s alternative series “America’s Next Great Restaurant.”

As part of his prize, Woods’ concept made its grand opening Monday, May 2, at Mall of America, and simultaneously at two additional locations in New York and Hollywood.

Iron Chef Bobby Flay, with investors Curtis Stone, Steve Ells and Lorena Garcia, said Soul Daddy had the greatest potential to succeed in the competitive restaurant market and invited people to see for themselves at the roll out of the three eateries.

How to start composting for your garden

How to start composting for your garden Ecological experts have proposed countless ways to improve the environment, but something as simple as changing the way you dispose of your trash could have a significant impact on the future of our planet.

By composting biodegradable materials, such as yard trimmings, food waste and disposable paper products in a pile or bin, a nutrient-rich soil is created that can be used for gardening. This soil reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, is better for the environment and  will save you money. It also promotes healthy foliage and growth -- a boon to gardeners everywhere.

Police remind residents to party responsibly

As the weather improves and people hold more parties both in and outdoors Minneapolis Police want to remind people to drink responsibly, be mindful of their neighbors, prevent underage consumption and take steps to prevent party guests from drinking and driving.

Last year the Minneapolis Police Department responded to approximately 2400 complaints of loud parties.  Most were called in by neighbors disturbed by the noise.  Residents are reminded that there is a City ordinance regarding excessive noise after 10 pm.  In most cases officers were able to convince party hosts to comply but return calls to the same party often resulted in residents being cited.  The City can use party citations as leverage against landlords to deal with tenants who create a nuisance.

Westbound Milkyway illuminates Spring sky

Westbound Milkyway illuminates Spring skyDuring May the sun climbs almost as high as it will get, bringing balmy but shorter evenings to watch the heavens. This year stars get most of the attention, since all but one of the bright planets are now clustered in the predawn sky.

Luckily, the lone bright evening planet is Saturn. Coming out in the east after sundown, the majestic orb traverses the night sky above the bright star Spica, in Virgo. Its rings are tilted only about eight degrees from horizontal, but through a telescope the planet's golden color never fails to delight.

Making the most of the hot glue gun

Making the most of the hot glue gunMy son, Landon, and his second grade class just did a science project.  They were assigned an animal to research—Landon’s was the cheetah.  Using clay, the children created a small replica of their animal and then recreated the animal’s natural habitat inside of a shoebox, using their imaginations, plus crayons, paint, construction paper, and anything else they could think of.  While I didn’t want to be one of those ‘helicopter moms’ (you know, they hover over their kid, micromanaging all aspects of school projects and activities), I did feel it was necessary to introduce him to my secret weapon for school projects—the hot glue gun.

Budget bedroom updates

Budget bedroom updatesI stopped by Macy’s Furniture Showroom in Bloomington to check on a kitchen table that I had seen online (it was on sale, of course).  While I was waiting for my salesperson to check whether they would meet or beat their competitor’s (even cheaper) price, I wandered up to the clearance area.  Leaning on the wall, straight ahead was a stylish two-tone headboard with my name written all over it—I had been looking for a new, low-cost one for a while.  Upon further inspection, I was delighted to discover that it was a steal—its price of $90 was scribbled on the large red attached sticker!  Score!   Long story short, I excitedly paid for my headboard, and began to make mental notes about how I would maximize my mini bedroom makeover project.  Now that it’s springtime, and most of the snow has melted, you may be itching to do the same.  Even if you only have a small budget to work with, you can achieve big results in the bedroom, (which may set the stage for more ‘big bedroom results’).  Take cues from my mini makeover ideas and see how they may inspire your own creative juices.
