Do you still have goals that you have been working on for some time now? Are these goals ones that you work on daily, or are you working on them in your spare time? Why is it so hard to retain fund development professionals? That's the polite version of the question that has executive directors pulling their hair out, and nonprofit board members wondering "what's going on?"
Do you think I am friendly? Am I approachable? These and similar questions has been asked of me by men and women alike. In most cases, I am thinking, "If you have to ask the question, you may already have your answer." But in some cases, it may be that the person is in the dark of why people don't approach them or think they are friendly. This week I had the opportunity to speak with a group of individuals about courage. I started with the question: "What is courage?" I was amazed with some of the answers they gave. Most of these individuals spoke of courage being when they found the strength to accomplish the goals that they set. I see courage in the same way. Every day, we experience events that would break the spirit of ordinary people, but as a resilient people, we have managed to find the silver lining. Time and time again we have found positive responses to adversity. The annual Rondo Days celebration is a testament of our resilience. Here is a little history of the Rondo Days celebration.
As we move closer to celebrating this year's Declaration of Independence and enjoying family and friends on the 4th of July, you should also take some time and reflect on your own declaration of interdependence. We are all born into this world with a dependency on others. As new born babes, we need someone to feed and nurture us. Without this care, we could only live for a few days at most. Moving from dependence to interdependence takes time, growth, and development. As we move through the maturity continuum, we all progress through several stages. The three major stages of maturity are dependence, independence, and interdependence, with the highest stage being interdependence.
