The City Council's Ways and Means Committee will consider the nomination later this month in a public hearing. If the committee approves the nomination, she must be confirmed by the full City Council before serving a two-year term.She will replace 11-year City Attorney Jay Heffernan, who was not reappointed by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak.
"Susan is a well respected attorney and leader with a strong record of accomplishment both inside and outside of government," said Rybak in presenting his nominee to the Minneapolis City Council. "Perhaps most important, she has a passion for public service and the City of Minneapolis that will serve our city extremely well. With her solid management experience, I am confident that Susan will run our City Attorney's Office effectively, will ensure strong enforcement of our laws, and will provide ongoing advocacy to bolster the juvenile and criminal justice efforts now underway in Minneapolis."
"I am deeply honored that Mayor Rybak has chosen me to lead the City Attorney's Office and I will do my best to ensure that we maintain the highest standards of public accountability and produce solid results for the residents of Minneapolis," Segal said. "As City Attorney, I will focus on aggressive prosecution of chronic and repeat criminals, domestic violence and DWI cases. We must also ensure that our community prosecution initiative remains successful and that we continue to do our part to preserve livability for our residents."
Born in Minneapolis, Segal has a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School, and an undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She graduated from Minneapolis' former Marshall University High School and currently resides in the Lowry Hill neighborhood with her husband and two sons.
