HIRE Minnesota served a Missing Persons Report to the Minnesota Department of Transportation Thursday to remind the agency that women and people of color are missing from highway construction sites around our state. See video below.Each year, MnDOT gives hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money to private contractors to build and repair our roads, bridges and transitways. MnDOT is required to meet federal goals for women and minority contracting and workforce development, yet the agency has never met its goals.
HIRE Minnesota is a coalition of 65 community organizations, led by Summit Academy OIC and the Will Steger Foundation, that is seeking public investments that grow the economy, provide living wages and pro¬mote healthy communities. As government makes decisions about how to spend millions of dollars of federal stimulus funds, HIRE Minnesota is asking that those investments create green jobs that benefit low-income communities and communities of color. In addition, HIRE Minnesota is demanding that government be transparent and accountable in meeting its obligations to communities.
