WASHINGTON--Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, released the following statement after voting against the Consolidated Appropriations Act, which funds the federal government through the remainder of Fiscal Year 2012:
“This bill continues down the Republican Congress’s wrongheaded path for our country. By enshrining the Budget Control Act of this summer, the latest appropriations package maintains handouts to special interests at the expense of the middle class.
“The bill takes away heating assistance from low-income families just as we approach the winter months and, in the midst of the deepest jobs crisis in decades, slashes jobs training programs. Meanwhile it increases wasteful Pentagon spending and continues funding the war in Afghanistan, which has gone on far too long.
“All year long the Congressional Progressive Caucus has pushed for deficit reduction that creates jobs. The Restore the American Dream for the 99% Act introduced by the Congressional Progressive Caucus reduces the budget by $2 trillion. Experts estimate it will create over 5 million desperately needed jobs in 2 years. The American people want serious deficit reduction that invests in jobs, not cuts to services they depend on.”
