Mail back of census questionnaires saves taxpayer dollars

Kansas City -- The 2010 Census is well underway with the U.S. Census Bureau mailing 2010 Census questionnaires to about 120 million addresses nationwide.  The questionnaires will arrive March 15-17.  Residents are encouraged to complete the 10-question census form when it arrives and to return it in the accompanying pre-paid envelope as soon as possible.

Klobuchar announces $31 million for Hunter Education and Fish and Wildlife Conservation Projects in Minnesota

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar recently announced that Minnesota will receive $30,978,760 to support hunting, sport fishing, fish and wildlife conservation and education programs across Minnesota.  The funds will be made available through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program (WSFR).

NAACP applauds US Secretary Duncan's speech affirming renewed commitment to quality education and civil rights protections

WASHINGTON,  DC – The NAACP applauded Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s announcement recently of  a renewed effort to vigorously enforce federal civil rights laws while addressing the challenges of failing public schools, and restoring the country’s active commitment to the landmark Brown v Board of Education ruling that ended legal segregation. American schools are more segregated now than they have been in over 40 years – today, 39 percent of Black students and 40 percent of Latino students attend highly segregated schools where 90 to 100 percent of the population is non-white.

Congressman Ellison announces job creation billWASHINGTON, D.C. – With cities and communities in Minnesota facing more potential layoffs amidst budget squeezes, today Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN) joined House Democrats and a bipartisan group of mayors to announce new legislation to create one million public and private sector jobs in local communities. After seeing the strain put on cities in the Fifth Congressional District, Congressman Ellison authored legislation last year to help local governments and create one million new jobs. His legislation was incorporated in the bill introduced today by Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller, called the Local Jobs for America Act.

Minneapolis Public Schools lockdown update: After school activities will continue as usual

MINNEAPOLIS – This morning, we received a tip from local law enforcement regarding a threat made toward a Minneapolis Public School through two social networking sites. We immediately placed all of our schools throughout the school district on code yellow lockdown as a precaution. During a code yellow lockdown, instruction continues as usual, but students remain in their classrooms and outside access to the buildings is limited. We asked our staff to check the identification of anyone coming to our buildings.

New American Media tells Congress to use the nation's ethnic media more effectively to increase accuracy of the 2010 census count

WASHINGTON-The US Census Bureau is missing opportunities to provide
reporting instructions to diverse communities in the United States by
failing to fully utilize the ethnic media that can reach more than 60
million adults in those communities, according to testimony from New America
Media (NAM) in Congress today.

NAACP unanimously elects youngest chairNEW YORK (NNPA) - Hours before the NAACP officially announced that Roslyn M. Brock was the new chair of the National Board of Directors, she sat down with the NNPA in her suite at the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan for an exclusive interview.

Brock, 44, a vice-president at Bon Secours Health Care, has been affiliated with the NAACP for 25 years, beginning in youth leadership and currently the vice-chair of the organization’s board, the youngest person and the first Black woman to hold the post. She is set to replace the venerable Julian Bond, who announced his retirement several months ago.

City’s Great Streets program spurs vitality and investment in its neighborhood businesses

Mayor R.T. Rybak and the Minneapolis City Council have approved $475,000 in support of façade improvement grants through the Great Streets Neighborhood Business District Program. Neighborhood organizations, business associations, and community development corporations will administer the façade improvement programs.
