Sometimes during quiet moments, I remember the heart-wrenching day last spring when my daughter, while relaxing on our family porch, was suddenly grazed by a bullet. If it had come any closer to her heart, she would have died. Although this happened in my St Paul neighborhood, I know there are communities all over the world where violence is a daily occurrence.

Ellison calls for party unity following DFL primariesWeeks after several hard-fought primary races – one so hotly contested, a recount was needed to determine the victor – one of the DFL deans called for party unity.

US Rep. Keith Ellison held a breakfast at his West Broadway campaign office with several of the candidates in attendance as a show of party unity. All of the candidates pledged to support efforts to defeat two November ballot initiatives – one to force voters to show state-issued identification in order to cast a ballot, and the other to ban gay marriage.

Turning a dream into reality

Last week, we celebrated the 49th anniversary of the March on Washington for Freedom and Jobs.

This historic march on Washington was the beginning of Dr. King's focus on national economic inequality.  Sadly while progress has been made in the last half-century to advance economic and racial justice, the need for affordable housing and greater economic equality are still obstacles in the path of realizing Dr. King's dream.

Dehn wins recount by 20 votes

Raymond Dehn is in fact the winner of the DFL Primary for the State House Seat in Senate District 59(B).

Terra Cole, who lost to Dehn in the Aug. 14 primary by just 19 votes, requested a recount to verify the validity of the results. At the conclusion of primary voting, Dehn had 876 votes to Cole's 857. Ian Alexander, who also competed in the primary, received 627 votes.

Recount scheduled for House District 59B Primary contest

Terra Cole who lost to Raymond Dehn by 19 votes for House District DFL 59B  in the August 14th Primary Election, has requested a discretionary recount of all ballots cast. Hennepin County Elections Division has notified all DFL candidates and has scheduled the recount for at 10 am on Thursday, August 23, 2012,  at Minneapolis Elections Warehouse, 732A Harding Street NE, Minneapolis MN 55413.
