The Minnesota Black Chamber of Commerce First Annual Golf Tournament Friday, July 29th at Heritage Links in Lakeville, MN supports the chamber’s College Scholars Fund. The Fund, launched in 2009, works to close the post-secondary completion gap and make young people a centerpiece of the community’s priorities.

The college scholars program includes employment/internship opportunities, scholarships, and mentoring. “We appeal to you to support the development of our College Scholars Program by joining us at our 1st annual golf tournament,” said Lea Hargett, president of MBCC. “Many of our young business leaders will be present, sharing their talents, and leading the festivities. We take our responsibility to teach, encourage and engage young people very seriously.”

Fantasy football outlook: Believe in Mark Ingram

If you scamper around the web, many online rankings and mock draft results will have Mark Ingram falling to around a seventh-round selection, or ranked in the 25 – 30 range for running backs.

It seems many experts and fantasy owners are still scared to draft a Saints running back because of all the rotational use over the past few years with Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush and others. This is understandable as many fantasy owners have been let down by Bush’s disappointing career and Thomas’s constant health issues.

While Ingram has to prove he can stay on the field, at the pro level, he seemed to have no problems with durability at Alabama, outside of his hamstring injury that cost him a couple of games to start last season.

Washburn High School gets $200K grant

Minneapolis Public Schools will receive a $200,000 grant from the Minnesota Vikings as part of the National Football League Grassroots Program.

The grant, awarded by the Vikings, the NFL Youth Football Fund and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), is part of $2.5 million in field refurbishment awards allocated this year. It will be used to replace the natural field at Washburn High’s MacQuarrie Field with synthetic turf as part of the MPS Team Up for Turf campaign, a commitment to raise $2.2 million to convert the athletic fields at Henry and Washburn high schools to state-of-the-art synthetic turf fields.

Derek Jeter hits no. 3000

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter recorded his 3,000th hit in dramatic fashion Saturday, homering on a 3-2 pitch from Tampa Bay southpaw David Price in the third inning to become the 28th member of the 3,000-hit club.

He is the first Yankee to tally 3,000 hits all in pinstripes.

Jeter quickly rounded the bases and was mobbed by his teammates at home plate, where a celebration ensued and fans, teammates and even the Rays players themselves cheered on “The Captain.”

He also singled in the first to get to 2,999 and doubled for hit No. 3,001 in the fifth inning. His home run was his first at-bat with a shot at No. 3,000

After head coach of NC State, Tom O’Brien, sent Russell Wilson packing, it looked like Wilson may settle for baseball in the Colorado Rockies organization. But as time elapsed during college football’s offseason, various suitors came to Wilson in hopes to acquire a veteran and accomplished commodity.

It worked.

Earlier today, Wilson took a page from LeBron James’ decision and created Decision Part II when he announced that he would continue his college football career in Wisconsin for the Wisconsin Badgers. But is anyone to blame? Is it a good fit? How does O’Brien and the Wolfpack feel now that their best player, since Philip Rivers, rides off into the sunset?

Golf needed a Rory McIlroy.

It needed a feel good moment. A comeback story. Someone to root for. Someone young and refreshing, who could breathe new life into a sport that had gone stale since its last young superstar melted down off the course.

It’s been quite a rollercoaster ride for the Miami Heat this year. LeBron James’ “Decision” to come to Miami went way too noticed, and led to a feeling that the season started early. The anticipation of seeing what the newly assembled super team could accomplish set the stage for the rollercoaster’s initial drop.

Of course as soon as the team experienced a streak of consecutive losses, panic, jeers, and debates were once again set off. It only took the team losing three games in a row in November to do that—this new age of media is really something else.
